Yo Mama: A Tribute to Mothers Everywhere

Yo mama is so dumb...yo mama is so ugly...you mama is so...yo mama... Everyone wants to tell jokes about their mamas but without our mamas we wouldn't be here! I watched the Mother's Day episode of the Ellen show from Friday and was laughing at the funny jokes they were telling and was excited for all of the first time mothers who got all kinds of fabulous things for their babies to come.

I know though that this time of year is always a sensitive time for so many people. I lost my mom eleven years ago and I still think about her all of the time. Some holidays like Mother's Day can be more difficult than others. Some people are quiet and withdrawn while others are mad or cry on days like today.  We all handle grief and change in different ways and it's important that we realize and understand that and just be there for each other.

This time of year I am also reminded that I am a mom. Well, I am always reminded I am a mother but this time of year, everyone else wants to remind you too. Even though I may not have my mom here on earth any more, I have been blessed with that same title, Mom.

I also know people who have struggled with becoming a mother- whether there were fertility treatments necessary to have a baby for the first time or maybe some even experienced secondary infertility, it was a struggle. Or maybe the struggle was in the transition phase after having a baby and experiencing frustration and doubt and perhaps even depression.

What about those that adopt children? You are their mother whether you carried them in your womb or not. What a blessing to rear a child!

Maybe you are a mother to step-children. My step-mom is my friend so I will tell you that these relationships can be equally as full of love and laughter and friendship but I imagine difficult to also find your place.

And then there are those who are mothers to angel babies. Babies in Heaven that are looking down on us each day. Babies that we will one day be able to see again.

Yo mama. She brought you into this world. She may be weird or loud, she may dress funny, she may embarrass you, but she's yo mama.

Appreciate her every day that you have her here on this earth. What I wouldn't give to talk to my mom on the phone and tell her about my life and everything that is going on in it. What I wouldn't give to hear that crazy laugh or hear her tell that stupid joke or say that classic line to me one more time.

My son is my constant reminder of my mom. He has her eyes and her wit. He and I talk about her and I tell him how much they would have loved each other. Sometimes he laughs when I tell him about the embarrassing things that she used to say or do to me. Then he reminds me I am not that different...

Yo mama. Tell her or the mama figure in your life today (and everyday!) how much you appreciate them and all that they do!

Here are a few of my favorite pictures of my mom, my son and myself- Enjoy!

Right after we came home from the hospital.

First Christmas and still one of my favorite pictures!

My son and I this week on a Menchie's date!

My mom probably in the 80's but it's one of my favorite pictures of her.

This picture hangs on my refrigerator where I see it everyday.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you! Thanks for reading and following along with me!
